SUMMARY:LatinX in AI & Robotics
DESCRIPTION:Room: Room 401 (Omni Atlanta Hotel at Centennial Park) \nLaunched in January 2018\, a group of leaders from academia\, industry\, and social impact sectors united to focus on “Creating Opportunity for LatinX in AI.” This initiative aims to elevate LatinX representation in AI and address the biases that permeate machine learning\, ultimately benefiting our communities. As the number of Hispanic and LatinX AI practitioners grows\, it is crucial that we have opportunities to share our work at global AI conferences\, unlocking opportunities for collaboration\, funding\, and career advancement. \nFor ICRA\, our specific goal is to enhance networking opportunities within the Latin American and Hispanic communities and broader community\, particularly in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence\, and to foster greater engagement in these areas. IEEE’s mission to foster technological innovation and excellence to benefit humanity requires the talents and perspectives of people with many disciplinary backgrounds.

SUMMARY:Harnessing Learning\, Data\, Foundation Models and Open Source: How African Scientists are Advancing Robotics Research
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Wednesday\, May 21st for a forum showcasing robotics research and innovations in industry\, agriculture\, and education in Africa\, led by Africans and their partners. The event will feature keynote presentations from leading experts in the field\, along with lightning talks by authors presenting their research at ICRA. \nThis year’s focus will be on advancements in machine learning and efforts to foster collaboration and accelerate development by making code available openly. Our goal is to highlight the groundbreaking and innovative work taking place across the Continent\, as well as to foster knowledge exchange and networking opportunities for the scientific community in Africa and globally.

SUMMARY:Queer in Robotics: Building a Community and Generating Inclusive Guidelines
DESCRIPTION:The Queer in Robotics event at ICRA aims to build an inclusive community for queer students\, researchers and practitioners. Queer in AI’s demographic survey reveals that most queer scientists in the robotics community do not feel completely welcome in conferences and their work environments\, with the main reasons being a lack of queer community and a lack of role models. Organizations like Queer in AI and Queer in Robotics have worked towards creating inclusive and welcoming environments for queer researchers\, yet the voices of marginalized queer communities—especially transgender\, non-binary\, and queer BIPOC folks—have been neglected in the broader research community. The purpose of Queer in Robotics’s event at ICRA 2025 is to create a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ researchers in robotics to promote their research. We aim to foster connections between queer researchers to facilitate the academic development of the queer research community\, who face unique barriers to both entry and success in robotics research. This workshop will produce a usable set of guidelines for robotics conferences to better include queer researchers in robotics. IEEE’s mission to foster technological innovation and excellence to benefit humanity requires the talents and perspectives of people with many disciplinary backgrounds.

SUMMARY:Robot Ethics Forum
DESCRIPTION:Room 401 \nSince its inception\, the field of Robotics has been fraught with ethical risk. Moreover\, the same risks that haunted the field at its inception continue to represent prominent challenges today. In this forum\, we will focus on two key areas of ethical concern surrounding robots: their use as tools of surveillance and their impacts on labor. \nTo explore these topics\, the ICRA 2025 Ethics Forum will bring together experts from disparate fields of study to examine the historical antecedents of these concerns\, the modern ways in which these concerns manifest\, the ways these concerns are expected to manifest in the future\, the technical approaches that we (as technologists) might take to address the concerns\, and the social approaches that we (as citizens) might also (or alternatively) pursue to address those same concerns.

SUMMARY:Multi-Modal Sensing and Shared Control: The Future of Wearable Robotics?
DESCRIPTION:Multi-modal sensing and shared control are rapidly evolving fields that are pivotal to advancing the field of wearable robotics. This half-day workshop will delve into cutting-edge technologies that incorporate multiple sensing modalities—such as visual\, tactile\, and electrophysiological inputs—into wearable devices\, improving their adaptability and functionality. We will also explore shared control\, where users and robotic systems collaborate to enhance both user experience and performance across various applications\, from rehabilitation to personal assistance. By integrating novel sensing modalities and biosignals within unified control architectures\, researchers have a unique opportunity to explore how to increase device autonomy while still enabling users to maintain a sense of agency and ownership. Participants will gain insights into the latest innovations and emerging trends in wearable robotics focusing on multimodal sensing and shared control\, showing how these technologies can improve device utility\, thereby enhancing quality of life for users.

SUMMARY:Learning Meets Model-Based Methods for Contact-Rich Manipulation
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores the challenge of enabling robots to autonomously handle complex\, contact-rich interactions. Traditionally\, model-based methods have provided structured frameworks for planning and control\, while recent learning-based methods have leveraged large datasets to achieve new capabilities. However\, these methods often overlook the structured insights that model-based approaches offer. \nAs robotics continues to evolve\, there is a growing need to integrate the adaptability of learning-based techniques with the precision and efficiency of model-based strategies. The workshop will bring together researchers to debate the future of dexterous robot manipulation and the roles of model-based optimization versus data-driven approaches. \nKey questions to be explored include: \n\nIs a structured approach still necessary for future robots\, or can expressive neural networks alone suffice?\nWhat role will model-based optimization play in the future of dexterous robot manipulation?\nHow can we effectively use limited data to train robots\, and should we impose more structure to enhance learning?\nWill the development of comprehensive robot datasets remain an open challenge?\nCan the integration of model-based and learning-based methods lead to more robust and versatile robotic systems?\n\nThe workshop will feature talks\, presentations\, and heated debates to evaluate how these approaches can be combined to enhance robotic autonomy and efficiency in contact-rich environments. Participants will critically examine whether traditional robotics techniques remain relevant in a field increasingly dominated by machine learning and discuss the skills and strategies needed to develop the next generation of intelligent robots.

\nBy integrating novel sensing modalities and biosignals within unified control architectures\, researchers have a unique opportunity to explore how to increase device autonomy while still enabling users to maintain a sense of agency and ownership. Participants will gain insights into the latest innovations and emerging trends in wearable robotics focusing on multimodal sensing and shared control\, showing how these technologies can improve device utility\, thereby enhancing quality of life for users.
