SUMMARY:Grand Challenges in Robotics for Nuclear Environments: A Call to Action
DESCRIPTION:The last decade has seen significant progress in the development and use of robots in nuclear environments across fission\, fusion\, and big science (e.g. CERN). Whilst much of the early application focus was on decommissioning and disaster response in highly radioactive environments\, this has shifted significantly to encompass day-to-day operations and maintenance in low-radiation areas. Additionally\, fusion energy presents a potentially game-changing solution to present climate and energy security challenges\, yet has significant outstanding challenges that need solving including those related to robotic maintenance. \nDespite these new opportunities\, there are still barriers to the wider robotics community engaging with nuclear end-users. This workshop is a Call to Action to the robotics community\, presenting a Grand Challenges which act as focal points for fundamental robotics research. These Grand Challenges have been developed by the global nuclear community specifically for the robotics research community to provide direction for the next 5 – 10 years of research. The workshop will also address how to remove barriers with respect to demonstrating research to the nuclear communities to open the application domain to the whole robotics community\, through the use of mechanisms such as digital twins\, demonstration environments and accessing real-world test facilities.

SUMMARY:Handy Moves: Dexterity in Multi-Fingered Hands
DESCRIPTION:Multi-fingered robotic hands hold an immense potential for flexible manipulation in human environments. From using tools like scissors to preparing food\, handling cloth\, and robustly tying shoelaces\, many mundane activities are enabled by – or become more flexible with – additional degrees of freedom\, allowing for in-hand manipulation and dexterous environment interaction. With the ongoing waves of advancement in artificial intelligence\, learning techniques\, robust teleoperation\, the proliferation of affordable tactile sensors\, and the expansion of diverse datasets\, we are closer than ever to overcome major existing challenges and unlock unprecedented levels of dexterity in robotic manipulation.However\, we also acknowledge the current state of research: In practical applications\, multi-fingered hands usually demonstrate a lower grasping and manipulation success rate compared to two-fingered parallel grippers; more robotic datasets and benchmarks focus on grippers than on multi-fingered hands; and grippers already serve a wide range of industrial applications. In light of these challenges\, this workshop is dedicated to exploring a critical question: how can we overcome the challenges of dexterous manipulation and unlock the potential of multi-fingered hands? \nThis workshop intends to answer this question in four key aspects: \n1. Investigating Manipulation Limitations: Understanding the constraints linked to mechanical design and control \n2. Examining Advanced Algorithms: Reviewing state-of-the-art algorithms for dexterous manipulation \n3. Enhancing Dexterity and Adaptability: Exploring new paradigms to improve the dexterity and adaptability of robotic hands \n4. Envisioning the Future: Considering how foundational models can revolutionize dexterous manipulation \nThe objective of this workshop is to foster collaboration among researchers at all career stages with a strong interest in robotics\, artificial intelligence\, control theory\, mechanical design\, and related fields.

SUMMARY:ROBOT-ASSISTED ENDOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Vascular diseases are leading causes of ischemic heart disease and stroke and lead to significant global mortality. Endovascular interventions\, such as neuroendovascular and cardiovascular interventions are a minimally invasive approach that provides the benefit of faster recovery\, less general anesthesia\, reduced blood loss\, and lower mortality compared to open surgery. This approach now includes advanced procedures like complex aneurysm repair\, stent placement for peripheral artery disease\, valve replacement\, and novel therapy delivery beyond traditional cardiac ablation\, angioplasty\, and stenting. \nDespite its advantages\, endovascular intervention face limitations such as excessive radiation exposure\, lack of 3D mapping and haptic feedback. Robotically steerable catheter and guidewire technologies have emerged as a promising solution\, enhancing precision\, stability\, reducing radiation doses\, and improving access to complex anatomies. \nThe workshop aims to explore clinical opportunities\, technical requirements\, and regulatory challenges for robot-assisted endovascular interventions. It seeks to unite researchers\, engineers\, and clinicians from academia and industry to discuss and identify new applications and barriers in this field. The workshop’s goal is to foster collaboration between academia and industry to address and overcome the technical\, clinical\, regulatory\, and translational challenges for practical clinical implementation of robotic endovascular interventions.

SUMMARY:Thermal Infrared in Robotics
DESCRIPTION:Achieving robust autonomy in robotics is challenged by sensor data reliability\, especially in extreme environments. Conventional sensors like RGB cameras fail in low-visibility conditions (e.g.\, smoke\, fog\, low light)\, while active sensors such as Radar and Lidar struggle with reflective medium and particle obscurants and often lack dense information at close range. Thermal infrared cameras offer advantages for robust sensing: they work well in low light\, provide high-resolution imaging\, and are crucial for search and rescue and hazard detection. However\, they face challenges\, such as noise from flat field correction\, ambiguous tone-mapping\, difficult calibration\, and temperature drifts. With the advent of compact\, affordable thermal cameras\, interest in thermal imaging for robotics is growing beyond military and surveillance usage. \nThis workshop aims to advance the emerging field by providing a platform for sharing developments in localization\, mapping\, navigation\, segmentation\, detection\, and other methods tailored for thermal infrared imagery. We will invite leading researchers and experts to share insights and breakthroughs while encouraging contributions from newcomers and diverse backgrounds. Attendees will engage in discussions\, network with experts\, and explore future directions\, making it invaluable for advancing thermal imaging in robotics.

SUMMARY:2nd Unconventional Robots: Rethinking Robotic Systems Beyond Convention
DESCRIPTION:When you think about a robot\, what comes to mind? A humanoid\, quadruped\, quadcopter\, or a multi-degree of freedom robot arm? These standard robot morphologies have become widely commercialized and are often our go-to general purpose systems\, benefiting from well-established and accessible tools for working with these robots. However\, when a task falls outside of the operational capabilities of these robots\, this gives us an opportunity to rethink the design of a robot\, making it more unconventional. \nAn unconventional robot design can offer the potential for enhanced capabilities\, improved performance\, and operation in complex and unstructured environments. These designs include exploratory robots for space and Earth sciences\, modular robots for industrial applications and transportation\, and soft robots for medical uses and human interaction. However\, unconventional robots are often underactuated or characterized by high degrees of freedom\, necessitating the development of novel mechanisms\, models\, and control strategies. \nBuilding on our first unconventional robots workshop at ICRA 2024\, this workshop aims to provide a platform to discuss several key questions: \n\nHow can we create systematic approaches for designing\, manufacturing\, and modeling complex robotic systems?\nHow can embodied intelligence be integrated into robot design and control?\nWhat strategies can advance unconventional designs from laboratory settings to real-world applications?\nHow can we bridge the gap between modeling and controlling unconventional robots in simulation and achieving reliable performance in real-world systems?\nHow will specialized systems and standardized robots coexist in the future?\n\nWe aim to bring together researchers and engineers from diverse fields—including mechanism design\, modeling and simulation\, and robotic sensing and control—to share their insights and experiences in developing and advancing unconventional robots.
